Wyoming State Legislator Sue Wallis has been trying for years to open horse slaughter plants in the U.S. A group of federal lawmakers supported by the agribusiness lobby succeeded in banning USDA inspection of meat.
Wallis says she has plans for horse slaughterhouses in Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon and Washington. However, Valley Meat in Roswell, New Mexico is suspending plans for a plant in the State. Kudos to Governor Susana Martinez and Attorney General Gary King for their strong opposition to such a plant.
Mountain Grove, Missouri ran Wallis and her cohorts out on a rail. In Rockville, Missouri plans are being stalled. Other states that Wallis thought were sure bets have been rather quiet.
In the U.S. horses are not raised for food nor do consumers want horse slaughter houses or their products. The killing of healthy horses is inhumane and cruel, especially to use to cater to foreign tastes and interests. However, American horses are being shipped to Canada and Mexico for the purpose of slaughter.
Please contact your congressmen, strongly but politely ask them to support the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act supported by the HSUS and Front Range Equine Rescue. Sue Wallis and others of her ilk must be made to understand that these noble creatures have served man for centuries and their welfare is a great concern of the American people.
