What is the origin of the Glen of Imaal Terrier?

When Elizabeth I hired French and Hessian soldiers to solve her problems with Ireland, they brought their dogs with them. They settled in the Wicklow Mountain area of Glen of Imaal where they bred their dogs with other terriers. The resulting dog, the Glen of Imalll Terrier, was used to hunt vermin and herd livestock.

What does the Glen of Imaal Terrier look like?

The Glen is 12-14 inches tall and weighs about 35 lbs. The head is large but in proportion to the body. Ears are rose or half pricked when alert. Legs are short with bowed forelegs. Eyes are medium size, round and brown in color. The tail can be docked to half where this practice continues. The coat is medium long, harsh with a soft undercoat. Colors are wheaten, blue or brindle. They shed little so require regular brushing and twice yearly stripping. The coat can be neatened with a scissor.

Glens are courageious dogs, agile and silent when chasing game. They can be stubborn, so positive, consistent training is necessary. They are very devoted and gentle with their family. Glens are very good with children. The may show some aggression toward other dogs, mainly the males. They can view other pets as prey. Glens need daily walks and play in a secure area.

What is the Glen of Imaal Terrier used for?

They are still used to hunt foxes and badgers and other vermin. But the Glen is foremost a loving, loyal companion dog.
