This toy terrier was created in Australia. In the late 1800s crosses with the Yorkshire Terrier and Australian Terriers produced 3 breeds. Silkys were then bred together to create today’s dog.

• What does the Silky Terrier look like?

Silkys are 9-10 inches tall and weigh 8-11 lbs. The dark eyes are round. Ears are v-shaped and erect. The tail is docked where this practice continues. The silky coat is straight and about 5-6 inches long. It has no odor and doesn’t shed. Colors are black, blue, silver, gray, all with tan markings. Brush and comb the coat daily.

• What is the temperament of the Silky Terrier?

The Silky Terrier bonds closely with its family. As always, even with toy breeds, the Silky should have obedience training and socialization. This should be undertaken with a gentle voice and calm demeanor. Unless raised with children, it may not get on well with young ones. Silkys like to chase cats and small animals, but if raised with a cat, it will get along well. They are wary of strangers. They are aggressive towards other dogs. Silkys adapt to your lifestyle, but don’t like to be left alone. They are very playful and energetic and enjoy daily walks. They should be leashed as they will chase anything that moves.

Originally, Silkys were used to hunt vermin. They are good watchdogs, compete in agility and earth dog trials. Silkys are loving companions.
