Laid-Back Dogs

Not all of us have the time or energy to take our dogs for long walks. Some of us may have physical disabilities that prevent or inhibit us from giving our dogs their walking exercise. Elderly folks, although not all, may not have the stamina to go for long walks or engage in vigorous physical activity. But don’t be discouraged. Although all dogs require exercise, there are breeds that don’t need as much activity as others.

Some dogs even have reputations as “couch potatoes.” They need our encouragement to move. For those of you who are fans of large breed dogs, here are three to consider.

The Old English Sheepdog loves to play but requires only short walks.

The Bull Mastiff, although fierce-looking, is really gentle and does well with short walks.

The giant Great Dane needs lots of room to move around in, but this sweetie doesn’t need those miles of walking.

For those of you who prefer small or medium size dogs, here are some breeds that may interest you.

Pugs and French bulldogs enjoy short walks or playtime, especially when it’s hot and humid outdoors.

Shih Tzus, although lively, will make do with a backyard run.

Pekingnese and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are friendly, affectionate dogs and need only light exercise.

Although Greyhounds are speedsters, they are well-known for being couch potatoes and don’t require long walks.

Bulldogs like to walk but do best at short distances.

Basset Hounds are a laid-back breed, move slowly and are happy to go for short walks or a romp in the backyard.

Of course within all breeds there are those dogs that can have low energy levels. However when choosing a dog, consider your activity level and which breed fits into your lifestyle.

You can also look into shelters for those marvelous adult mixed breeds whose personalities are already formed. Your “couch potato” could be waiting for you there.
