Fishermen in 19th century England wanted a certain type of dog to retrieve their kills. Crosses with setters, pointers, other retrievers and straight-coated dogs resulted in the Flat-coated Retriever.

What does the Flat-coated Retriever look like?

This Retriever is 22-25 inches tall and weighs 60-79 lbs. The head is long with a long deep muzzle. Ears are small, pendant and thickly feathered, lying close to the head. The tail is carried almost horizontally. The coat is thick and straight, medium length and lies flat. Colors are solid black or liver. The coat should be brushed weekly.

Sweet-tempered, lively and playful, this Retriever bonds very closely with their family. they should have early obedience training and socialization to avoid problems. Flat-coats respond well to gentle training. They love children, but should be supervised with toddlers as they can become too excited in their play. They get along well with other pets and are friendly with strangers as well. Retrievers are very active dogs and need daily vigorous exercise with a family that enjoys the outdoors.
