What is the origin of the Bracco Italiano?

The Bracco Italiano or as it is also known, the Italian Pointer, is believed to date back to the 4th and 5th centuries BC. Its ancestry is believed to incude Mastiffs and some hounds. The Bracco is not very common in Italy and is rarely seen outside of Italy.

The Bracco is a powerful dog, males stand 23-26 inches tall while females are 22-24 inches. Weight is 55-88 lbs. The ears are long and pendulous. The tail is sometimes docked where this practice is still legal. The lustrous coat is short, rough and dense except on the head, ears, legs and feet where it is softer. Colors are white, white with orange or chestnut markings, white speckled with pale orange and white mottled with chestnut. Occasional brushing is necessary.

The Bracco is calm and obedient and has a lot of staying power. They will not accept harsh training. Use positve methods with a gentle voice and they will be easily trained. Braccos are good with children, other dogs and other pets, but should be socialized early. They bond closely with their humans and need human companionship. They are best suited for an active family that enjoys hunting.
