What is the origin of the Kai Ken?

The Kai Ken, also known as the Tora Inu, is a centuries old breed originally from Honshu Island, Japan in the Kai province. It first made an appearance in the U.S. in the 1950s. It is considered one of Japan’s national treasures.

What does the Kai Ken look like?

Males are 18-22 inches tall, females are 17-20 inches tall. Weight is between 30-40 lbs. The Kai is a medium size dog. The head is wedge-shaped with a long muzzle. Ears are erect. The tail is shaped like a sickle or curled over the back. The coat is medium long and coarse. Usual colors are black or brindle. Since the Kai has almost no odor and is clean it only needs regular brushing and bathing occassionally.

What is the temperament of the Kai Ken?

The Kai Ken is a highly intelligent dog. It trains easily as always with a firm but kind hand. Early socialization and training are recommended. The Kai is wonderful with children, but children should be taught not to tease or mishandle dogs. They get along well with other dogs and do better when raised with other pets. Kais are very affectionate and loving with the family but may be reserved with strangers. They adapt well to apartment living as long as they have enough exercise including several daily walks always on a leash and a run in an enclosed, protected area.

What is the Kai Ken used for?

The Kai Ken was originally used to track wild boar and deer. With its strong protective instincts, it is an outstanding watchdog. They like to sit in high places and observe. The Kai is an excellent, loving, playful family companion.
