What is the origin of the Anatolian Shepherd Dog?
The Anatolian Shepherd is probably descended from Roman war dogs that came to Turkey more than 4,000 years ago. The Turkish name, Koban Copek means “shepherd’s dog.” Nomadic shepherds ranged over large areas and brought these dogs to defend livestock against predators. The Anatolian Shepherd Dog was introduced in the U.S. in the 1950s.
What does the Anatolian Shepherd Dog look like?
Anatolian Shepherd Dogs are large and muscular, 27-30 inches tall and up. Weight for males is 110-150 lbs. and females 80-120 lbs. Ears are v-shaped with rounded tips. Eyes are almond-shaped. The tail is long and set high with a curl at the end. The thick coat can be short or medium length. Colors can be any colors, the most common is fawn with black ears and muzzle. Weekly brushing will remove dead hairs.
What is the temperament of the Anatolian Shepherd Dog?
Anatolians are intelligent dogs, easy to train. They are sensitive to harsh commands and should have positive, consistent training. They don’t get along with other dogs unless raised with them. They are highly suspicious of strangers. They are affectionate and protective with their family and good with children. a good long daily walk is necessary.

Anatolians are still used today as guardians of flocks. They are guardians of family and home as well.
