What is the origin of the Large Munsterlander?

The Large Munsterlander was first seen in the 1800s in Germany. Although they both carry the name Munsterlander, the Small and Large are not related. There is a connection to the German Long-Haired Pointer and many people believe that is was once a color variation of the black and white long-haired pointer.

What does the Large Munsterlander look like?

The Large Munsterlander is an elegant looking dog. Height for males is 24-26 inches, for females, 23-25 inches. Weight is 50-70 lbs. with the male being the heavier. Ears are broad, round-tipped, lying flat against the head with hair extending beyond the tip. The nose is black. Eyes are very dark brown. The tail is carried horizontally. Ears, legs and tail are feathered. The head is predominately black, sometimes with a white blaze. The coat is long and dense. Colors are black patches over a white background that can be ticked. This breed is a heavy shedder, especially in season. Brush at least 3 or 4 times a week.

The Large Munsterlander is very intelligent, brave and loyal with a calm disposition. It is easily trained with a gentle hand and consistency. This breed loves to work and wants to please its humans, so learns quickly. It is a lively dog without being nervous. The Large Munsterlander will be a watchdog when necessary and will bark loudly. It is gentle with children but because of its size, youngsters should be supervised. It is good with other pets as well. As a hunting breed, the Munsterlander requires vigorous daily exercise and would do very well with an active family. Best suited in a home with a fenced-in yard.

The Large Munsterlander is an excellent hunting dog and adapts to all types of weather and all terrains. They’ve been trained as bird (birds of prey) dogs, but will sometimes go after small animals.
This is a lively, dependable, trustworthy breed and a wonderful family companion.
