We reported recently on an Iams pet food “product pull” and what it means. Iams has now elevated the pull to a Recall “due to aflatoxin levels that were detected above the acceptable limit.”
Crops that can be affected include corn, rice, wheat, sorghum and pearl millet; oilseeds – peanut, cotton, sunflower, soybean; spices – chili peppers, black pepper, turmeric, coriander, ginger; nuts – walnut, coconut, brazil nut, pistachio and almond.
The FDA has established acceptable levels for aflatoxin present infood to protect animal and human health. Aflatoxin is a species of aspergillis, a fungus that is toxic and highly carcinogenic.
The products recalled are:
Iams ProActive Health Smart Puppy dry dog food with expiration dates of February 5 or February 6, 2013.

The affected product was distributed to retailers in the Eastern U.S. and has already been removed from shelves. No other Iams pet food was involved and no illnesses have been reported to date. (12/6/11)
