Once thought to come from Egypt, the Pharaoh Hound is native to Malta and rarely seen elsewhere. Used in rabbit hunting, it’s name in Malta, Kelb tal-Fewek, means “rabbit hound.”
What does the Pharaoh Hound look like?
Pharaoh Hounds are 21-25 inches tall and weigh 40-60 lbs. depending on gender. Ears are large and carried erect. Eyes are amber-colored. The nose is black. When excited, ears and nose turn bright pink. The tail is whip-like. The coat is smooth and short and lies flat. Colors are shades of red, shades of tan to chestnut, sometimes with white markings. Grooming need is occasional brushing.
