Bordetella (Kennel Cough)

Sick Dog

Bordetella is the inflammation of the trachea (windpipe) and the bronchi. It is also known as infectious tracheabronchitis.

Symptoms are a hacking cough that may or may not produce mucous, nasal discharge and difficulty breathing. If not treated, it can lead to pneumonia.

Kennel cough occurs often when boarding a dog in a kennel. The infection can be airborne or transmitted by contact with dogs already infected. Signs of kennel cough can take several days to appear.

You can protect your dog by vaccinating against kennel cough, particularly before putting your dog in a kennel.

The vaccine is given by a spray in the nose. Immunity to kennel cough takes 5 days. Check with your vet as to how often your dog should have a booster. If your dog doesn’t spend time with other dogs in confined quarters, the vaccine may not be necessary.

The best defense against kennel cough is keeping your dog’s immune system in top condition. A good quality immune strengthener made for dogs can help. Choose high quality foods for your dog’s diet. Watch your dog’s weight – obesity can lead to a number of illnesses.
