The English Springer Spaniel is the forerunner of all English hunting spaniels. The name derives from the springing action of the dog when it flushes out prey. It was the perfect partner for hunters in Europe and has been popular in America since 1700.

Particular attention should be paid to ears and feet to prevent problems. The eyes are hazel or brown. The tail is short and fringed. The hair is fringed at the throat and chest also and is of medium length. Colors are white and liver or white and black.

The Springer is a very good-natured dog and loves everyone. It is usually a gentle dog and very friendly and playful and is great with children. The Springer is courageous and intelligent and learns quickly and cheerfully. If left alone too much the Springer can be destructive. Gentle training works well, but you must let the Springer know that you are the boss. Springers are active dogs and need lots of exercise. Even a rather small enclosed yard will work off some of the energy.
