The American Quarter Horse is a combination of the English and Chickasaw Horses (brought to the U.S. by the Spanish). In the 1700s, the colonists impressed by this intelligent, sturdy, agile horse soon began using it for work. The Quarter Horse was a favorite of cowboys, with its natural abilities on a cattle ranch.

The American Quarter Horse stands 14-16 hands high. It has a small, short head, powerful hindquarters and a broad chest. There are 2 types – stock and racing. The racing Quarter Horse is run in quarter mile sprints, which is where it got its name. Colors are sorrel (brownish red), black, buckskin, palomino, gray, dun and brown.
