What is the origin of the Belgian Sheepdog?

Belgian Sheepdogs are actually 4 varieties that in the U. S. are considered separate breeds. The Groenendael is closely related to the Belgian Tervuren, Malinois and Laekenois. A Belgian breeder, Nicholas Rose, developed the Groenendael and established the first Belgian Sheepdog kennel. The Sheepdog is also known as Chiens de Berger Belge.

What does the Belgian Sheepdog look like?

The Sheepdog is medium sige, 22-26 inches tall and weighs 40-70 lbs. depending on gender. The skull is flat. Eyes are almond-shaped. Ears are triangular and erect. The tail has a slight curve when the dog is moving, carried low when at rest. The double coat is straight and long. Color is black. The coat needs brushing at least twice a week.

What is the temperament of the Belgian Sheepdog?

Belgian Sheepdogs are intelligent, very active dogs. Early consistent obedience training and socialization will help avoid problems. Training should be positive but firm. They are good with children but may try herding them, sometimes by nipping as they do with livestock. They are wary of strangers. If socialized properly they can be good with other dogs and small pets, but keep a watchful eye. Belgian Sheepdogs are high energy dogs and need lots of vigorous exercise and long walks and runs in a secure area. They can live in an apartment if sufficiently exercised.

What is the Belgian Sheepdog used for?

This versatile dog was used for guarding and herding livestock. Among its many uses are guide dogs for the blind, therapy dogs, police and military work, search and rescue, agility, obedience, tracking and herding trials. They are very protective of their family and love their humans. They make great companions for active owners.
