The Dachshund has been around for many years. Images of the breed were seen on tombs of pharoahs 5,000 years ago. The Germans still use the Egyptian name, Teckel.

What does the Dachshund look like?

There are 3 types – shorthaired, longhaired and wirehaired. The standard (there are also miniatures and toys) weighs 16-32 lbs. and is about 8-9 inches tall. The Dachshund comes in many colors – tan and red, bi-colored black, brown with tan or cream markings, also dappled, brindle and sable. The Dachshund body is muscular and long with short legs. Eyes are dark red or brown/black and ears are long.

What is the Dachshund’s temperament?

The Dachshund is a tenacious dog, affectionate, proud. Care must be taken with children as they can be nippy if defending themselves. The Dachshund might get along with the house cat, but is likely to chase other cats. It is an independent thinker and willful and needs patience with training.

What are the Dachshund’s uses?

The Dachshund was bred to hunt, easily burrowing underground to catch its prey. It is a great companion dog and makes a good watchdog as well.
