What's the best light for my tortoise?

Do I need a special light? Is it ok if I just take him out in the sun every day?

The sun is an excellent source of Vitamin D3, but it depends on how much exposure your tortoise gets. Reptiles need D3 to effectively metabolize calcium. They get D3 from the UV parts of sunlight. High quality fluorescent lights made for reptiles that have high UVB output are probably best. A separate basking lamp is necessary for heating.
