How successful is elbow dysplasia surgery in dogs?

+1 vote
My German Shepherd has been diagnosed with elbow dysplasia. I've heard of hip dysplasia, but this is the first time that I've heard that it can effect the elbows as well. The vet told me that surgery is one of our options. How successful is the surgery?

Success, measured in terms of improvement after surgery, is good for dogs less than 2 years old. Older dogs with DJD (Degenerative Joints Disease) can be candidates for surgery, but may not show as much improvement. In any case, dogs with DJD will develop arthritis eventually.
