The first thing to do is to thoroughly research beekeeping. Speak with other beekeepers and ask advice. Don't rush the learning experience, you have to be sure it's something you can commit to. Are you prepared to do the manual labor required? Can you keep calm and patient around a swarm of bees? Can you handle being stung by a bee? If you are allergic to them, then you already know beekeeping is not for you. Spring, summer and autumn are the busiest times for beekeepers. During winter, hives still need to be checked, particularly after a storm. How will your neighbors feel about having bee hives closeby? Do you have other pets that could cause problems? Consider where you would place the hives. Do you have an area far enough away from foot traffic? Your bees will need a source of water and lots of flowers. Add to the initial cost the safety equipment you'll need. If you've done all the research and understand the commitment and have the proper place, then you are ready.
