James Herriot is a ficticious name used by veterinarian James Alfred Wight. He was an Englishman, born in 1916. He graduated from  Glascow, Scotland Veterinary College and  practiced veterinary medicine in Yorkshire, England where he and his family remained for the rest of his life. Dr. Wight wrote a number of books under the name James Herriot telling of his adventures as a veterinarian. His most well-known book is "All Creatures Great and Small" which was later made into a film and TV series. His practice included dogs and cats and farm animals. In his books, there were many times when money never exchanged hands, but people would offer him goods instead which he accepted gratefully.
