The Boston Terrier, sometimes referred to as the Boston Bull, is an American dog, but it does have French and English ancestry. This terrier earned its place of honor in Massachusetts as state mascot in 1979. It is recognized by the AKC as a non-sporting dog, not a terrier.

What does the Boston Terrier look like?

The Boston Terrier has a distinctive short muzzle with a good size black nose. Tail is short. Size is 15-17 inches tall and about 15-25 lbs. Its ears are small and erect and eyes are large, round and dark. The Boston’s hair is short and fine and is considered a non-shedder. Colors are black or brindle with white markings.

What is the Boston Terrier’s temperament?

The Boston Terrier is very intelligent but can be a bit difficult to housebreak. It is lively and as it is sensitive to one’s tone of voice, learns quickly. While the Boston Terrier was used for fighting, it is now a gentle, affectionate dog, good with children and the elderly as well.

What is the Boston Terrier used for?

The Boston Terrier is an excellent companion dog. Because it is Brachycephalic and has a pushed in nose, care should be taken in extreme weather conditions. It can easily live in a big city apartment. Some Bostons will also guard the home.

Possible Health Issues

Brachycephalic syndrome (possible respiratory problems), patellar luxation, eye problems, deafness, hemivertebrae (curled or “screw tail” or twist in spinal cord).
