What is the origin of the Harrier?
The Harrier is one of the oldest scent hounds and can be dated back to 13th century England. Harriers have been known in the U.S. since colonial times.
What does the Harrier look like?
The Harrier is a medium size dog, 19-21 inches tall, weighing 45-60 lbs. depending on gender. Ears are low-set, pendant with rounded tips. Feet are cat-like. The long tail is carried high. The coat is smooth and short. Colors are all colors of dogs. The coat needs only occasional brushing to remove dead hairs.
What is the temperament of the Harrier?
Harriers are amiable and tolerant dogs. Used to being in a pack, the Harrier gets on well with other dogs. As they are hunters, they may see other pets as prey. The Harrier resembles the Beagle and is friendly and gentle. They love children. Harriers need long, vigorous walks with lots of playtime and if possible, an enclosed area to run in. They don’t do well in apartment living.
