In the 1950s, in Louisville, Kentucky, breeder Nikki Horner set out to create a miniature black panther. She started by breeding a sable Burmese with a solid black American Shorthair. The breed was accepted into championship in 1976.

Bombays are sleek black cats. They are muscular and agile. They have close lying glossy coats that need to be black all the way to the roots. Eye color can be anywhere from copper to green.
