What is the origin of the Chinese Crested?

The Chinese Crested originally came from Africa and were known as African Hairless Terriers. There were taken back to China by trading ships and renamed the Chinese Crested. Cresteds are a rare breed.

What does the Chinese Crested look like?

Chinese Cresteds are 12 inches tall and weigh less than 10 lbs. There are two varieties, with and without fur and they can be born in the same litter. They are known as the Hairless and the Powderpuff. The Hairless has fur on its head, tail and feet. The Powderpuff’s coat is long and soft. Ears are erect. Eyes are almond-shaped. Care should be taken when the Hairless is in the sun to prevent the skin from burning. Color of coat is any color of dog. The Powderpuff should be brushed regularly.

What is the temperament of the Chinese Crested?

As with any dogs, Chinese Cresteds need early training and socialization. They are good with children and other pets. An intelligent breed, they can be taught to do tricks. They have a tendency to dig holes, so fences should be secure. Because of their size, they do well in apartments. Chinese Cresteds form close attachments to family and love their humans.
