In the 1800s Australian ranchers needed a dependable dog to control cattle. The bred the Australian Wild Dog with smooth-coated Blue Merle Collies, later adding Dalmatian and Australian Kelpie.

What does the Australian Cattle Dog look like?

The Australian Cattle Dog has a strong, compact body. Height is about 18-20 inches and weight 30-50 lbs., females being a bit smaller. The nose is black and it has a scissors bite. Ears are set wide apart, medium size and erect. Eyes are oval and dark brown. The coat is traight and hard with a short, thick undercoat. Colors are blue, blue-mottled, blue speckled and can have blue, black or tan markings or red speckled. As the coat continually sheds, frequent brushing is recommended.

The Australian Cattle Dog is a highly energetic dog and needs an owner who is equally active. They are bred to be working dogs and are very intelligent. This dog needs to be kept from boredom which can lead to destructive behavior. Early training and socialization can avoid problems. Australian Cattle Dogs are very loyal and quick to protect their family. They don’t do well with other dogs and cats unless socialized when young. They are good with children, but young children should be supervised when playing with the dog.
