The Chow Chow is a very old breed, dating back thousands of years in China. English merchant ships brought it to England in the 19th century where it gained popularity.
What does the Chow Chow look like?
The Chow Chow’s large neck ruff gives it the appearance of a lion. The tongue, gums, lips and palate are a purplish color. There is a rough coated and a smooth coated variety. The ears are small, triangular and carried forward. The eyes are small and dark. Its dense coat should be brushed regularly. Colors are solid red, black, cream, tan, grey and rarely, white. The tail is carried over its back.
What is the Chow Chow’s temperament?
The Chow Chow is a very dominant dog and will boss everyone and everything it comes into contact with unless obedience trained and socialized beginning at a very early age. You must be firm and consistent in the training or the Chow Chow will take over. They are good with children and very loyal to the family. They adapt to apartment living but should be exercised regularly.
What are the Chow Chow’s uses?
The Chow Chow has been used as a guard dog and is a good watchdog. Properly trained it makes a good companion dog.
