What is the origin of the English Shepherd?

The English Shepherd was thought to have been brought to England when Caesar and the Roman Legions invaded in 55 B.C. They were used to herd the invaders’ livestock. Left along the way when there was no need for them, they bred with local dogs and produced the English Shepherd. The English then brought the dog with them when settling in America. It is now considered an American breed. When The Border Collie became popular in the 1950s, interest in the English Shepherd waned and it has become a rarer breed.

What does the English Shepherd look like?

Height is 18-23 inches tall and weight can be anywhere from 40-60 lbs. Ears are semi-erect. Eyes are usually brown, but can be blue on occasion. The coat is double, coarse and can be straight, wavy or curly. Colors are black and white, sable and white, tricolor or black and tan. Markings on the black and tan are similar to those of the Rottweiler. Regular weekly brushing keeps the coat good -looking.

What is the temperament of the English Shepherd?

The English Shepherd while active, has a calm demeanor. The train easily, but are somewhat independent. Early positive training and socialization are recommended. The are very good with children and will be protective of them. When raised with other pets, they will accept them. The English Shepherd is usually good with other dogs. They can be reserved with strangers. These Shepherds are active dogs and should have daily exercise and stimulation. They do best when they have a job.

What are the uses of the English Shepherd?

English Shepherds can be found on farms herding and protecting any type of livestock. They are excellent watchdogs and can be used for hunting. They have competed in agility trials, flyball and frisbee. English Shepherds are wonderful companions for active families.
