The Rat Terrier is an American breed. Since the 1920s they have been commonly found in farms where they are considered all-around farm dogs. While its earliest ancestors were brought to the U. S. from Britain, the Rat Terrier was further developed in America to increase speed, prey drive and scent.

What does the Rat Terrier look like?

Rat Terriers are small to medium size dogs. The standard is 13-18 inches tall and weighs about 25 lbs. they are muscular dogs with strong jaws. the head is fairly long and appears wedge-shaped. Eyes are set far apart, slightly prominent and can be round to almond-shaped. Ears are v-shaped. folded over or erect. The tail is docked and carried horizontally or almost erect when alert. The coat is short, thick and shiny, soft to medium hard. Regular brushing will rid the coat of dead hair.

Rat Terriers bond closely with their owners. They should have early positvie training and socialization to avoid problems. They are usually friendly towards other dogs. They are very playful and are good with children. Rat Terriers are sometimes reserved with strangers. They are active dogs and should have lots of exercise, and if possible a secure fenced-in yard. They can live in an apartment as long as they have playtime outdoors.
