What is the origin of the Black Russian Terrier?

In the 1940s the Soviet military’s need for a working dog led them to breed an Airedale Terrier, a Giant Schnauzer and later, others including Rottweilers in the mix. The resulting offspring is the Black Russian Terrier, what the Russians consider the ultimate dog, nicknamed “Cherny.”

What does the Black Russian Terrier look like?

The Black Russian Terrier is a massive, muscular dog, 26-30 inches tall and weighing 80-130 lbs. The head is powerful with a large nose. Ears are smallish, triangular and set high. Eyes are oval-shaped and dark. The thick tail is set high and docked where this practice continues. Feet are large and round. The coat is coarse and rumpled with a thick soft undercoat. Color is black, sometimes with some gray hairs. The coat requires brushing twice weekly and clipping every 4-6 weeks.

What is the temperament of the Black Russian Terrier?

The Black Russian Terrier is a calm, courageous dog. Highly intelligent, the Black Russian trains easily. They are affectionate and very protective of their family. They don’t tend to be aggressive, but as with all dogs, should be trained and socialized early. Black Russians love children and will protect them. They get along with other pets, but may not do well with dogs they don’t know. They are wary of strangers. The Black Russian can adapt to live anywhere you do except hot climates. Exercise needs are long daily walks and playtime.

Black Russian Terriers do well in obedience and agility trials. They excel in schutzhund. Black Russians are excellent guard dogs. Their loyalty and protectiveness make them good family pets.
