What is the origin of the American Hairless Terrier?
In 1972 in Louisiana, a hairless, female pup was born to a Rat Terrier. Presented to Edwin and Willie Scott, after several breedings, Josephine, the Hairless Terrier produced a hairless male and female on December 30, 1981. That was the beginning of the American Hairless Terrier.
What does the American Hairless Terrier look like?
The American Hairless Terrier is sometimes considered a Rat Terrier because it is identical to that breed, but it is recognized as a separate breed. Small to medium in size, 13-18 inches tall, weighing about 25 lbs. Eyes are almond-shaped and ears are erect. Unlike other dogs considered hairless, the AHT is born with a downy coat which disappears by 6-8 weeks of age. The only hairs found on the AHT are eyelashes and whiskers. The skin is pink with black, grey, red or golden spots. This dog has sweat glands and doesn’t pant like other breeds to cool off.
What is the temperament of the American Hairless Terrier?
The AHT is an active dog with the sparkling personality of terriers. As with all dogs, they should have early positive training and socialization. They are easily trained and want to please. The AHT is very playful and is good with children and usually good with other dogs. They require lots of exercise, of course in a secure area. The can adapt to apartment living given enough playtime.
What is the American Hairless Terrier used for?
The AHT is fearless and makes a good watchdog. They are one of the best breeds for people with allergies as even those allergic to other dogs such as poodles, have no problems with the American Hairless. The AHT is a loving companion.
