How do I make homemade dog food?

+1 vote

There have been so many recalls on pet food that I thought it would be a good idea to make my own. How hard is it to do? Where can I find recipes?

It's not at all difficult to cook meals for your dog. You can cook up a week or two worth of meals and freeze them in meal-size containers. Vary proteins and veggies and don't add any spices. Defrost the meal and you can top it with cottage cheese or yogurt for an extra added taste that's good for your dog. I recommend Lew Olson's "Raw and Natural Nutrition for Dogs." Don't let the title fool you, there are cooked recipes in there as well. You'll find a nice variety of recipes along with which supplements to add and amounts according to the dog's weight. Following Lew's directions, you'll be sure your dog is getting the proper nutrition.

Dogs in a natural state are primarily hunters and scavengers, so feed your dog raw meat. Dogs love chewing raw bones (never cooked ones), but most dogs today are not given much opportunity to crunch up a bone and get all that nutritious marrow inside. Raw chicken legs, ribs, turkey necks, organ meat, eggs, beef heart ... these are things that your dog is equipped to crave, consume and digest. There are frozen patties you can purchase, too, but I wouldn't deprive my dogs the crunchy satisfaction of bones. It's not cheap, but it doesn't have to be complicated.

I think the commercial pet food marketing industry has got us all so fearful of not feeding a "balanced" diet that we don't stop to ask, "what does balanced mean?" Dogs do not have a food pyramid like humans do. They do not need vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts, dairy ... all the foods that you see on dog food bags. Dogs are not omnivores like bears are. In a natural state, dogs eat meat, and nothing else. Wild dogs and wolves don't even eat the stomach contents of the prey they kill. They are never observed eating berries, root vegetables, nuts or anything but meat. We even weaned our puppy to raw meat and she loves it. Dogs fed a raw diet have sweet breath, clean teeth, no skin allergies, shiny coats, calm energy, dense bone and they hardly ever get sick.
