Is there anything you can do beforehand to prepare your dog for the noise of fireworks? What about during the explosions?

cover their ears, use ear plugs for yourself. but if they really don't like anything leave them home in a room with all the blinds closed, etc.

Your best bet is to get your dog use to the sounds of loud noises before the 4th of July. Try getting a cd of loud noises. Start it at a low level and slowly increase the sound over time. This will get your dog to be less sensitive when the times comes. For more tips, read Calming Your Dog's Fear of Loud Noises
