Patience and repitition usually do the job. Choose a time each day. Teach your dog one command at a time until s/he masters it. When the dog doesn't respond, never punish, it doesn't work and can break the bond between you and your dog. Repeat a command only once. You might want to show the dog how to do the command. For example, if you want your dog to sit, gently put pressure on the back end and say your word for the command. When your dog follows the command or even sits without it, praise and give a treat.
