If you have a large enough cage, your guinea pig will get some exercise especially if there are toys available to keep him/her busy. But they do need to use their muscles to keep fit and trim. If you can, set aside a safe room and make it pet friendly by removing any objects that are chewable or may be toxic. Alternatively, you can get a playpen made for guinea pigs, puppies and kittens that is inexpensive. Please check our article "Exercising Your Guinea Pig" for other helpful tips. Never leave your guinea pig unattended while out of the cage. And let other family members know that your guinea pig is loose to avoid accidents. If your guinea pig is getting fat, you may be feeding too much. Cut back about 10% of feed - that and the exercise should pare down the pounds.
