Can rats and guinea pigs be put in the same cage?

I have a guinea pig and I'm thinking about getting a rat. Can they be put in the same cage?

No. They can become aggressive with each other and you would wind up losing one. They also have different diet and cage requirements. They are best left each in his own cage.
