If I get a second hamster, do I need to get another cage?

I have a hamster and I'm thinking about getting him a friend. I've heard that you need to introduce them to each other slowly. Buying a second cage is really expensive. Is there any other way to get them to accept each other without needing to shell out the money for a second cage?
