Diabetes occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin. Signs of a diabetic dog are increased urination, extreme thirst, hunger, constant tiredness and weight loss. If your dog is showing any of these signs, a veterinary examination is necessary, Your vet may suggest blood and urine tests. If the tests are positive, your dog will need regular insulin injections. Your vet will explain what care is necessary. Honey or glucose syrup should be kept on hand in case your dog’s glucose level is too low causing a hypoglycemic reaction. Again, consult your vet. Dachshunds, Schnauzers, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Poodles, Scottish Terriers, Saint Bernards and Australian Terriers have a higher incidence of diabetes than other breeds.
