Why do horses need horseshoes?

In the wild they don't have horseshoes. Why do they need them when they get domesticated?

Domesticated horses spend most of their time walking and running on hard surfaces. They need horseshoes to keep their hooves from wearing down too quickly and damaging them. Wild horses don't need shoes as their time is spent on soft grassy areas, protecting their hooves and allowing them to wear down at a normal rate.
