How do I treat a bee sting in cats?

+2 votes
My cat got stung by a bee. The area is swollen, otherwise she's acting normal. What should I do for her?

Keep checking the cat to make sure she is not having any difficulty breathing and is acting normal. Any respiratory distress needs immediate veterinary attention. Check if you can see if the stinger is still in the spot and use a tweezer to remove it. An ice pack or bicarbonate of soda made into a paste can be applied to the area to reduce pain and swelling. We keep prednisone on hand and always ask our vet - one 20mg. tablet usually helps the problem quickly. But check with your vet before giving your cat any medications as cats are particularly sensitive to drugs.
