Why does my cat like boxes so much?

Whenever there are any boxes around, my cat feels the need to investigate. Eventually he'll lie in them and go to sleep. What's the deal with cats and boxes?

My dog does the same thing, I think it's just their personality. You should leave one out for him. :)
