What should I do about hairballs?

+1 vote

My cat is long-haired and licks herself often. Then she throws up hairballs. Is there anything I can do to help her?

Smear a bit of petroleum jelly on a paw where the cat is likely to lick it. Some commercial products containing petroleum jelly are Laxatone, Petromalt or Katalax.  Fresh mashed or canned pumpkin (not the one used in pies) can also help your cat get rid of hairballs. Frequently comb your cat with a fine tooth comb to help get rid of loose fur. Before attempting any treatment, have your cat checked by the vet to make sure there are no other health issues.
