Can I train my 2-year-old parakeet to sit on my hand?

I've had my parakeet for about 1 1/2 years. He talks to me and dances and reponds to me when I walk in the room. I've never taken him out of his cage. Is there a way to train him to sit on my hand? I'd like to be able to take him out of his cage, but I'm afraid it will be dangerous for him.

First, bird-proof your house. Leave cooking for another time, shut any fans, make sure the fireplace isn't working, be careful with any large mirrors or open or uncovered windows. Then do the following steps for about a week each or until your parakeet responds well. Put your hand in the cage until he's used to seeing it there. Next step is to place a finger close to his abdomen, perhaps offering him a favorite treat.  Speak softly and don't make any sudden movements. If your parakeet seems fearful or runs away, be patient and start over. Eventually he will learn to trust you enough and sit on your hand.
