Why are there a lot of cats in the neighborhood missing the tips of one ear?

I've noticed that there are a lot of cats running around the neighborhood with one ear a bit shorter than the other ear. What's going on? Are these cats in some sort of cult?

It sounds like your neighborhood has a trap/neuter/release (TNR) program. Kudos to the powers that be. When a stray or feral cat is spayed or neutered, the tip of one ear is removed during the surgery to show they can no longer produce kittens. This program cuts down on the number of feral cats suffering because they have no home.
