Parrot-like fossils were first discovered in Europe. However these may not be the direct ancestors of today's parrots. Climate change in Europe, the continent growing colder, forced these birds to die out. The natural habitats of parrots are tropical and sub-tropical regions. There are about 350 species of parrot in the world today. They are naturally found in the continents of Australia, South America, Africa and the southern areas of North America (Mexico and Central America). The Oceanic region - Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea and neighboring islands - are home to many species. Parrots are not imported into the U.S. . Pet parrots are allowed in only after going through a quarantine period. Australia strictly regulates the export of any of their native live species.
