Cats purr using the vocal folds and/or muscles of the larynx (a hollow, muscular organ through which air passes to the lungs; the voice box). Dilation and constriction of the glottis (the part of the larynx containing the vocal cords) causes air vibrations as the cat inhales and exhales making the purring sound.
