Why do cats hate water?

I've heard that cats are natural swimmers. Why can't they stand water or being wet?

Some scientists believe that a cat's aversion to water stems from humans protecting them from the elements. Another reason is that their coats, when wet, become heavy and lose their insulation. But some big cats and domesticated breeds actually enjoy swimming. Big cats in hot climates will go for a dip just to cool off.  One of the domestic breeds that loves water is the Turkish Van. If a cat has had a bad experience during a storm or when being given a bath, s/he probably will not enjoy getting wet. Many cats are fascinated by water and will drink from a running faucet and play with it.
