Why does my cat's eyes glow in the dark?

0 votes

When it's really dark outside, sometimes my cats eyes seem to glow. What's up with that?

There is a layer of tissue behind the retina called the tapetum lucidum. It acts like a mirror reflecting light back to cells in the retina. This causes a cat's eyes to appear to glow when a beam of light is shined on them.
