How can I get my cat to stop head butting me?

I know that he's doing it out of love, but it can get really annoying sometimes. I don't want to just send him away when he's looking for affection, but it's soooooo annoying.

When your cat butts you, it's a sign of acceptance and affection. Your cat is rubbing pheromones on you to show that he trusts you. You might want to try distracting him with tossing a toy or a treat across the room. Preventing the cat from butting you may send a signal that you are not the safe person he thought you were. It could upset the bond between you. It's best just to try keeping his attention on something else.
