Answered: Which breed makes a good first horse?

Of course all horse owners have their favorite choices. and it depends on your situation - your age, whether or not you know how to ride, how much time you've spent around horses, etc. Some people suggest the American Quarter Horse for a beginner for its good temperament and trainability. Think about what you want to use the horse for and that can help with a decision. But any breed that takes your fancy is fine as long as the horse has a good disposition.

Answered: Are ponies baby horses, or are they a different species?

A pony is a separate breed , it is a small horse. A horse that stands 14.2 hands (a hand measure is 4 inches), high or less is considered a pony. Conformation, the body shape, is also taken into consideration. The pony developed after surviving in a harsh environment where food was scarce, producing smaller horses. The pony's size was then maintained through selective breeding.

Answered: How big do ponies get?

Ponies by definition are no more than 14.2 hands tall at the withers. A "hand" is 4 inches, so that's 58 inches or 4 feet 10 inches tall. Having said that, some pony breeds can grow bigger than that depending on genetics and diet. If a pony is taller, it cannot be shown in pony divisions. It wouldn't grow much taller than that, though, so if you're not into showing, don't worry about it. I would recommend getting a pony from someone who raises and trains ponies, so that your daughter can get some support in the beginning, from someone who knows the animal.

Answered: What is the best starter horse?

Quarter horses have a calm demeanor. But the truth is that any horse you bond with will be a good choice. When you're ready to purchase, take someone with you who is knowledgeable about horses to help you with your choice of horse.
